Les Nubians LIVE!!

Grammy Nominated international recording artists Les Nubians have intrigued audiences for over a decade with their inventive and glamorous Afropean style. This distinctive sound embodies the timeless vibrations of Miriam Makeba, Ella Fitzgerald, Doudou N’diaye Rose, Fela Kuti, Edith Piaf, The Fugees, and Soul II Soul.- Official Facebook

I had so much fun this past Saturday at the Earth Matters, Fashion Matters held at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art. The fashion show was awesome and Les Nubians performance was the best part of the event. I wasn’t a huge fan of them before their performance. Only because I didn’t know their music. Weeks leading up to the concert, I familiarized myself with some of their songs and I really liked their sound.  After their performance on Saturday, I am a certified fan. I would love to see them again and for longer this time around! Their performance on Saturday was too short but they definitely did an excellent job. I like their whole sound and style. Their natural hair, dresses, and accessories were on point. See some pictures and videos below 🙂

I was being a SERIOUS creep trying to get pictures of her hair!…lol I should’ve just asked her but I was being weird and shy. In my defense, when I finally found the guts to ask, she was being pulled in every direction by other people. This was Les Nubians third time performing at the museum and they seemed to know a lot of people at the event so a lot of people were chatting with them after their performance. They are cool and down to earth!

They’re also some proud naturalistas. They performed their song called “Afro Dance” which begins like this ” I love you {Afro, Afro}, I hate you, sometimes”. I feel that way about my natural hair sometimes too but it’s all love at the end of the day {side eye }! The song is fun and funky though.

My favorite song of theirs is Makeda! Such a smooth and sultry sound. I loved their live performance of it on Saturday and them girls whine! See below!

Apologies in advance for my slight singing..lol

So I am jealous. I discovered them through Pandora I believe. While trying to get my undergraduate degree I took French classes. Music was the best way to really feel the language. They have been to New York where I am from but not recently. I hope one day to get a chance to see them live.

I overheard one sister say that they were based in NY when someone asked her. I was surprised because I assumed they lived in Paris, France. Hopefully you can see them live in NY one day 🙂

Big fan of Les Nubians my Cameroonian sisters. Discovered them when they first came out while I was doing my undergrad degree and my friends needed someone to translate the lyrics (a ton of years ago)! Went to their concert in Atlanta once. Always admired their style and vibe. Aren’t they just darlings?! Proud of you for getting the pics 😉
