Creed Movie Review

Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed who died before he was born. Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa.

Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer. Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo—the fierce rival who became his closest friend. Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring.

With Rocky in his corner, it isn’t long before Adonis gets his own shot at the title…but can he develop not only the drive but also the heart of a true fighter, in time to get into the ring?

My Thoughts

(Spoiler Alert)

The movie was good and cute. I liked the plot. In the description above it states, “Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed who died before he was born.”  He was also the illegitimate child of Apollo Creed’s extramarital affair so there was some tension and resentment there in regards to that. I like how Rocky came out of his “low key” retirement life just to train Adonis. That was sweet and commendable. It definitely took some pleading and begging on Adonis’s part but Rocky finally came through for Adonis and became a father/uncle figure to him.

The film focuses a lot on Adonis’s romantic relationship with Bianca (played by actress Tessa Thompson). I thought their on screen romance was a bit distracting and cheesy. My bestie wasn’t feeling the chemistry between them and she thought they seemed more like brother and sister. I thought their “relationship” in the film was corny and unoriginal. However, I love how this film didn’t have the typical “happy ending”. It didn’t end the way all Rocky films do and I found that to be more realistic. My bestie had a problem with the ending and referred to Adonis losing his big fight as a “major turn off”. She also thought the movie dragged as in it played out slow.

Final Thoughts

See the movie with your friends, alone or your boo! It will keep you entertained especially if you’re already a Rocky fan such as myself. However, even if you’re not a Rocky fan (such as my BFF)  you will still be able to enjoy it. She liked it and gave it 3 1/2 stars. It’s definitely an emotional rollercoaster filled with triumph. It’s Rocky all over again but with a modern and black twist to it.  I won’t even say “urban” but straight up black..lol  Michael B Jordan did the role of Adonis justice. The Bopsie Twinz give it two thumbs up! We saw it at our favorite theater Center Park 8, located in Beltsville. Best reclining seats ever!

Have you seen Creed yet? What did you think of it?

Please share below and thanks for reading. Have a blessed weekend!
